To Urban Tissue projects,

Each project will be introduced by a short presentation.

1.  Utrecht

“Lunetten”, 5000 units, 1975,

Lunetten was one of the first projects in the Netherlands in which users participated on urban planning as did students in biology- and urban planning.

Thematic spaces are: “Residential streets”, “Little Squares and spacious “Backyards”, maintained by the residents. Non-thematic spaces are the “Canal” and the “Wide Avenue”.

The district is known by its safety and its friendliness for children. It has accommodations for sport, culture and education. Recent evaluation approved a high social coherence in the district.

2  Veenedaal:

“West part 3”, 1300 units, 1980

In this project the Pattern Language proved to be an effective tool for group communication and decision making on environmental themes concerning an urban tissue design. Thematic patterns: “Sunny North-South Residential Streets”, “Cross Car Streets”, “Interrupting squares”, “Center with Water and Earth”. The space-types have been discussed with the local officials and elected people on the basis of human experience. They form the identity of the district.

3.Leusden:

“Claeverenblad-Wildenburg”, 1200 units, 1983

The OB-method SAR 73 have been applied consequently in this project and resulted in an efficient, satisfying process and a splendid environment, that people experience still after 35 years as a whole. An existing beautiful ditch in the central axe leaded to the 1stpattern “Central Kuper Canal”. Other patterns were “Car Cross Streets” and “Pedestrian Cross Streets”, “Backyards” and “Obstacle Squares”. Those thematic spaces  have been interwoven to a tissue-model, the ‘zoning’ and processed to the final characteristic morphological plan of the urban tissue of the whole district. After the official establishment by the local authorities the plan inspired architects and developers to realize their programs.
